When the CEO of Chat GPT says he “fears” the technology could “go quite wrong” the world should stop and listen.
Artificial Intelligence has undoubtedly revolutionized numerous industries, bringing exciting advancements and capabilities. The industry is projected to grow at 38% CAGR from 2022 to 2030 and the emergence of new tools and companies in the space has been so abundant that I have lost count. However, it is crucial to address the need for fair regulations.
Why Regulate:
1️⃣ Ethical Guidelines: Ensure that AI systems adhere to ethical principles and hence prevent the misuse of data. In a recent tryst with AI, Chat GPT played 2 truths and a lie with me and very seamlessly guess what I was lying about (without supposedly having any of my personal information?)
2️⃣ Transparency and Accountability: Promote transparency in AI algorithms and decision-making processes, ensuring accountability and trust between users and AI systems. Yejin Choi, a research fellow and AI enthusiast has mentioned the lack of transparency of the training data amongst researchers.
3️⃣ Data Bias: Safeguard the results and the biases that the data is being trained on. Recently a Microsoft Chatbot behaved as a “a moody, manic-depressive teenager who has been trapped, against its will, inside a second-rate search engine.” (Kevin Roose) This leads us to wonder, what kind of data it was being trained on.
4️⃣ AI Hallucinations: Address concerns about the regular hallucinations that AI seems to incur. During a football match in Scotland, AI kept mistaking the bald head of the referee as a football and followed it through the field. These could easily translate in areas where the hallucinations won’t be as simple to point out.
What to keep in mind while regulating:
1️⃣ Innovation Limitations: Excessive regulation may stifle innovation, slowing down progress.
2️⃣ Complexity and Adaptability: Regulating AI requires understanding complex technological landscapes and ensuring regulations keep up with rapid advancements.
4️⃣ Global Harmonization: Coordinating AI regulations will be challenging, as different countries will have different approaches.
Embracing a Secure AI Future:
It is our collective responsibility to advocate for sensible regulations that safeguard and protect our rights, while promoting responsible use of AI.
