If you are looking for a quick and enlightening read, pick "The Four Agreements" by Don Miguel Ruiz.
A short, concise book that has rightly been termed “non-challenging” by a critic and emphasises the simplicity of living a happy life. This book digs deep into toltec teachings and reiterates the 4 foundational pillars that ideally are common sense, but often ignored in daily living:
Be impeccable with your word:
Speak with Integrity, with yourself and with others. Understand that your words have both negative and positive impact.
Don’t take anything personally:
Do not be led by what others think about you. How others behave is a projection of their own reality and choices.
Don’t make assumptions:
Do not make unwarranted assumptions that lead to suffering and anxiety. Prioritise clear communication to avoid misunderstandings.
Always do your best
In every moment of your life, just do your best. And understand that your best may vary as it can be impacted by circumstances.
What I loved about the book was its simplicity and clarity in putting forth some teachings that are spoken of in most of the philosophical practices. It talks about both the pillars of a happy existence, being a better individual and being a better part of a community. Have you read The Four Agreements? I would love to hear your thoughts!
